How Can Leadership Development
be Applied?

In addition to working with individual leaders, an executive coach is able to help others see the "big picture" within the team setting, and the overall corporate culture. The coach trains others to coach, establishing a coaching culture within the organization. The dynamics of team and corporate coaching involve an awareness of how things are impacting everyone within a team, group, or organization. Team Leadership Development can be done either onsite, or through retreats and offsite meetings, or a combination of both. In this case, an agenda is usually set by the corporate leadership, and the executive coach provides the tools for dealing with specific issues and facilitating the inside-out evaluation process. Offsite team development retreats can be powerful tools within an organization.

The executive coach becomes a facilitator for the entire development process through highly interactive meetings with leaders and team members. Key issues, what is working or not working, mechanics of time, format and goals, and all critical specifics are addressed. If desired, an "offsite" is planned for the entire team, almost always involving some element of fun, and always interactive.

A case study example

A company was run by a very autocratic, demand-and-command style of leader who eventually left the organization. But the damage done to the people remaining was immense. Communication was non-existent, and attitudes were negative and destructive.

New leadership came up that was absolutely committed to developing their greatest resource - their people. These new leaders were coached individually, and later with entire teams. One of these leaders had previously "managed" by the closed door policy. Through coaching, this individual is now working on better communication, personal character qualities, and a genuine interest and caring for the other members of his team. The entire leadership team has been coached individually and as a group.

During an "offsite" retreat, the team participated in a scavenger hunt that initiated great team bonding, but also revealed reflected truths useful for team development

The results? Today they have committed to creating a whole new culture that allows for the creativity, innovation and ownership of everyone involved. Review processes have been changed to developmental processes which focus on the future rather than the past. Every aspect of this corporate environment is changing - the people are responding beautifully, and are excited about the changes and their potential within the company. Coaching and accountability is continuing. And the very tangible benefit of all of this - a much increased bottom line!
